Top 15 Tips to Browse and Surf the internet safely and securely

Nowadays the use of internet has become very common. People of almost all age groups use it for their needs. It connects the entire world together. We blog, tweet, digg, and do much more ….
There are almost 10,000 new users connecting to the internet everyday. This makes it more easier in terms of Trojans and viruses to spread and infect other systems. Hacking has become common whether it is done to just play around or to steal valuable system information.
So here are my top 15 advices to prevent any such threat to your PC and browse the internet safely.
1. The mostly infected sites are the crack downloads, or anything that is offered (full version) free to you on the net is mostly infected and harmful. So prevent browsing any such site till you know it’s safe.
2. Although I strongly condemn piracy, but if you do want to download free stuff from torrents, go to a safe sit like thepiratebay.org. Confirm from someone who has already browsed it. Search whatever you want but before downloading always read the comments for that torrent as many say that the file is infected or it’s some funny stuff.

3. Many sites are infected by what is called “adware”. There might be a dialogue bax showing that there’s a new message for you or that you have won $10000 ……..do not click on them as these are infected.

4. While searching your e-mails, first read the sender’s name. if it’s someone you know or have enquired about only then open it. Do not open any suspicious mails that may spread virus across your hard drive.
5. Do not click on pop-ups or better not allow them to pop out. Although these are for ad purposes but some might have potentials threats attached to them.

6. Use a safe browser like Mozilla Firefox or Google chrome. These have pop-up blockers already enabled so no popping up of threats will be there.
7. Make sure network is firewalled. This ensures and prevents both un allowed intrusion from malware.
8. If you think that hacking is limited only to public servers and other company and bank servers then think again. Software’s that scan open ports in your computer for hackers to hack in and used very often. Install more efficient firewall software like zone alarm. This will secure your system more concretely.
9. Use software’s like Download Accelerator Plus which also gives signature of websites whether they are trusted or not.
10. In internet explorer or other browsers make sure that privacy settings or settings for active-x controls are above or equal to medium. For this go to tools->internet options->privacy in internet explorer.
11. When you are prompted to download an active-x plugin make sure it is safe.Ex. while streaming videos you are prompted to download flash player first. Search this keyword in Google and download it from official website.
12. Do not ignore the tag “THIS SITE MAY HARM YOUR COMPTER” against any website searched in Google.
13. Clear your cookies and history everyday. These are for use by website to keep track of your browsing and some malware might have sneaked in.
14. Use a good antivirus that comes with internet security like Norton, kaspersky. These have additional features like anti-phishing protection, inbuilt superior firewalls and site advisors.
15. Keep your antivirus updated to ensure safety against new and latest threats. Update your antivirus daily.
